I’m excited today because our seed order arrived in the mail.
The last frost date is arriving upon us rather quickly, and I should probably get some of them in the ground soon, and some in seed starter containers.
Are you growing anything different in your garden this year? This year I’m going to try Amaranth Pygmy Torch. I’ve never grown this grain before. The crimson blooms offer an unexpected pop of color. The flowers should dry nicely and of course the green-to-burgundy leaves and shiny black seeds are edible and the chickens will find them delicious.
This year I’d like to grow a variety of heirloom tomatoes. I’m so excited because the seeds came in the mail and I’m hoping that when ready for harvest that they are just as beautiful as the pictures shown on the seed packages. One of the varieties is called Tomato Black Beauty. This variety is the world’s darkest tomato. A dark, meaty, very rich-fleshed tomato with extreme anthocyanin expression (same antioxidant in blueberries and blackberries). The tomato is so dark that some tomatoes turn blue-black on the skin. I’m so anxious to get these babies in the ground.
Another variety is called Tomato Cosmic Eclipse. This is a multi colored tomato, spangled brick-red with green stripes, complemented by lots of black anthocyanin giving this a very striking muli-colored finish. It’s going to looking stunning in the garden and possibly stealing the show when guests arrive. Not only is this variety productive, it has a good post-harvest shelf life, maintaining superb eating quality for weeks.
My list of new varieties could go on and on. Let’s just say that I’m really excited to start getting my hands dirty. Seeds are really dirty deeds done dirt cheap.
