We lost a couple girls today…..

My husband and I went outside this morning to let the chickens out.  As we did we were only greeted by four chickens out of six.  My husband and I started looking around the area.

My husband walked towards the lower part of the property and I looked inside the coop hoping that they were just laying an egg in their nest box.  I took a peek inside and no one was present. I thought to myself, “hmmm that’s strange, did they sleep in?”  And looked up to the third floor where the roosting bars are.  Nope nothing.  I started walking towards the barn and heard my husband call my name.

image The way he called my name, I knew there was something wrong.

A part of me didn’t want to hear what he was going to say next.  A part of me didn’t want to walk to the lower part of the property. A deep part of me already knew that I lost them.

I walked towards my husband and paused once pearls white feathers came into view.  I didn’t want to go any further.  My husband, standing over Pearl telling me that he can’t find the other bird, then all of a sudden Mai Tai is in view and all I can do is point to where she was at. My husband walks towards Mai tai to investigate the crime scene.

Trying to make sense of all of this we walked the perimeter of fence, checking to see if there was a breech and sure enough there was.  A fox dug a hole big enough for it to crawl underneath the fence. It took the heads off the chickens and left the bodies.  Must have been scared off

Barred Rock Chicken

Why! Out of all the animals out there in the wilderness it chose to go after my chickens!  They trusted us! We’ve lost a total of four chickens this year.  First one to a hawk, another to natural causes, and recently two to a fox! Out of four years here, this is by far the worst year for chickens.

We’re living in a severe drought and wild animals are desperate right now I suppose.  That fox took a big chance coming through a fence with only one way to return back to. Hope we get rain this year.

Didn’t want to think about it anymore so we bought four more.  Their so cute i’ll post a picture soon.

Life goes on.

Thank you Pearl and Mai Tai for all of the yummy eggs you gave us.

The latest one we made is zucchini from the garden, onions, homemade sun dried tomatoes.  Scrambled them all together and put them on our toast that we had homemade pesto sauce with the basil from the herb garden.  Now that was delicious!
